As one of the poorest countries in Central America, Honduras is home to nearly 9 million people. The ill condition of this country is directly linked to deep rooted corruption. Unequal distribution of wealth, political insecurity, and gang violence are just a few examples of the specific forms of corruption the Honduran government has attempted to resolve. The poorest of the Honduran people are mostly isolated to the rural areas, such as: the South, West, and Eastern Borders. The Northern border is congested with industry that has been implemented to ship out natural resources. The history of Honduras is hostile, like many of the nations in the Northern Hemisphere that were colonized in the early 16th to 18th centuries. The story of Honduras is identical to that of other nations that have been "discovered" and stripped of their natural resources to sustain the greed of the developed nations. Having to exert power to overcome power, military rule was the first government structure put in place. Now that they have gained independence from the other nations, they are forced to resolve an inward battle of drug rings, and gang violence that plague the streets. Honduras is one of the three countries that make up the Northern Triangle. This distinguished region has been labeled as the most violent in the world, because of the excessive amount of organized crime that occurs within its borders.
